The Death of Art 7

"Thick with the cloud of threatened sleep, Katherine thought vaguely, do I dream… She rolled over; her nostrils filled with her own scent.  She breathed it in, wincing at the stark realization it presented.  No.  I don’t dream.  I don’t wish, even, any more.  I don’t hope, I haven’t prayed in years, and I swear the only beans I’ve bought are in my pillows at home.  I don’t even like beans.  Do I pretend… She could smell the addiction to work and to the gnarled sense of self she procured from routine in the dead cloth of her car seat. Do I pretend, ha!  With that her brow furrowed, hurt by the frank stab of her subconscious.  And it furrowed more, with the all too honest awareness that the only option left was one she fit into quite nicely, a hand into a glove.  I lie.
She lay, thoughtful.  Everybody lied, though.  Everybody cheated, and yelled, and scorned, and hated, and blamed.  It wasn’t that people were bad, just that they were people.  And that was OK; she was OK." -      -- by justplainweird (DeviantArt)

Today's topic is writing. Because people can't write. Well, some people can. Take the above example. I picked it because it uses both the style of the author as well as a quote from Shel Silverstein. It's a very well written piece, I'd recommend reading it. But that's beside the point. The point is writing. People are stuck in a cycle. Read something, try to write, write something similar to something else, rinse, repeat. I've done it, pros have done it. It's a common thing, honestly. I'd be lying if I said everything I wrote was unique and "perfect," because it's not. I try to be unique, but eh.

To be frank, there really isn't a lot to say about writing, I just wanted to make that first point clear. Try new things, Experiment!!! Be scientists with literature! Who says the scientific method is restricted to biology, chemistry, physics? All it really takes is a guess and a try! Well, and an idea. It's what all the best things are made of. Song writing, story writing, poetry, it's all the same in that sense. Don't rhyme in a poem except for every third line, alternating. (1 and 4, 2 and 5, 3 and 6, etc. It may turn out quite neat! I'll let someone else try it ;P)

Death of Art 6 - The Return

“To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable.”

Yup, another music blog. It's because I play, sorry guys! Facebook people, I have a blog you know... I'll link it at the bottom, but I kinda wanna only update on the blog, not on the facebook notes... Post a comment if you want it one way or the other. Like if you want to be blog exclusive. (And I will have blog exclusive posts just FYI) Onto the main thing.

One-hit wonders. Don't understand it, don't like it, eh it's not that great. This is another reason I kinda don't like itunes. I usually buy a whole album. Why? Because even if I only want one song, I'll listen to the rest. And you never know! If I had only bought "Angel Tangled in the Telephone Line" by Amy Kuney, I'd never have seen "Rocket Surgery," "Love is Trippy," or "Simple Things" on the SAME album! And all of those are great songs! As well as the poetic "Bird's Eye View Intro," which is amazing! (New fav... besides Meg & Dia, Blue Man Group, and Daft Punk. She's a different Genre, so these artist all represent favorites in different genres/sub genres. Duh ;P) Now, I know that people are like "ButI don't like ALL the songs." So what? When you buy physical cds, you can't pick one or two songs to get. Sure you can only download certain songs, but you still have the others right there. I personally think Mix CDs are the start of "one hit wonders" because people would put their favorite, so their friends only had one song. Hence One hit. I can see getting only a single, because, hey, it's only one song to begin with! But really, how many physical cds have only one song? Singles started for radio play. I think... 'Cause you don't hear a whole album on the radio! So an artist would pick their "best" song off the album and send it to the radio stations. Since they normally play what's popular, if it's requested often, they'll play it. It's not that hard to understand... But I still think it's worth it to get a whole cd. (Yes, I'm kinda hypocritical. Recently I've been getting only one song. I don't have the money to get the whole cd now =/ maybe after I work a couple weeks... and the stupid price raise made me go over 100 $ because they raised most of the songs I had to the new $1.29 price >.< Darn it!)

And I'm gonna put this out there, I honestly don't mind "album only songs." If I don't like the rest of the album, I listen to it on youtube. It's not that bad, to tell the truth. What pisses me off is the sudden "album only" status of MOST of the songs in my shopping cart on itunes! Like I bought most/all of the album, but the one song I REALLY wanted turns AO, so I have to delete and re buy the album! Bull Apple!! Not cool!

And as a side note, June...6th? 7th? I think 7th... yeah 7th. Playing at the Tustin Chili Cookoff! Come out and see us guys!!!! And enjoy the cookoff! :D It'll be fun, it's Sunday afternoon. I think we are up at 1:00!!!! Come see us!!! Fer serious :P

Death of Art 5

I should really get a creative title for these.... Anywho

Dancing. We all know it, we all have done it, but have we really? What is dancing? People jumping up and down in time? An art form with moves that must be executed at a certain time? Just something you are born with, or a talent that must take practice? Or just two kids going at it like no tomorrow (if you know what I mean >.< )? Really, what IS dancing?

Now, as a sort of disclaimer, this is all just my opinion. I'm no expert, heck I HATE dancing in once sense, if it is that last one. I can't just "jump up and down in time" to save my life, and I'm certainly not born with it. But I can jive, I can swing, I can waltz like no other. You don't believe me? Just watch the Newport Beach temple dedication celebration thingy's video! I'm right there, doing swing for ya! And I LOVE it! As for waltz, I can do that too! I should have been born in the WWII era as far as dancing is concerned! I mean, that's my kinda dancing. I'm sorry, but two kids that look like they should be getting a room... that's not dancing. Ballet, Swing, Foxtrot, Cha cha, Jive, Waltz, Tango, Salsa... THAT'S dancing. Even hip-hop! I mean, DANG have you seen them go? Yeah, it's new, yeah it's not traditional, but neither is break dancing! But it's still dance, and MUCH more so then the crude dancing that seems to be invading dances everywhere! At least I can really dance, and that's what counts. I just don't!

Now Church dances... those are a whole different ball game. They are a mixture of school dances (in terms of clean dancing, jumping etc) and lip sync dances, which are kinda a mix of dance and cheer >.< they have the pre planned dance moves, but they aren't really dances. Take "Cotton Eyed Joe" for instance. That's a pre planned EFY dance (EFY = Church summer camp, it's pretty universal so if you learn it at one, it'll be at another.) And it's a good one! But it's more like a Girl's Camp Lip Sync dance then what you would see when "Sing Sing Sing" comes on. oh, the reaction to that song is BOMB! Everyone starts looking for a dancing partner, and soon everyone is swing dancing. It's one of the only songs I'll actually dance to!

Last but not least, dance for sport, or recreation? I prefer recreation, and when I'm alone or with the minimum amount of people. Some prefer sport. It's all preference. I really have not much to say here, because I'm laid back in terms of competing.

Nicole signing out for now. Ciao!

The Death of Art - A side note

Just something I found interesting... Each note, except number 2 which has no responses, draws a different demographic. It seems as if the time makes a difference, but people respond differently to each note. People who follow books more than they do music or painting/photography seem to latch onto note 3, while others went and commented on note 1, making it refer to both Deviant Art and Itunes! I wrote it with neither in mind, but just thinking about how we buy one song, and soon forget about it. And how they all sound similar and such. Interesting thought XD

This is why I love Psychology/Sociology! It's so interesting! Continue.

The Death of Art 4

"Where words fail, music speaks." Hans Christian Andersen

More musical stuff!!!

Ok, so I got the new Rise Against album! And I really like it! But one things bothers me... A lot. People keep putting up reviews on ITunes (yes more itunes stuff XD) that were all, "I loved this album... Until Hero of War! How could the *continues ranting*"

Now, I don't mind the song, it's one of my favorites... but message wise, it is about corrupt soldiers, which is what gets people mad. It's about someone who joins the army (or some other branch, take your pick) And he makes friends, but doesn't quite know what he is getting himself into. He ends up going somewhere (they don't tell us) and capturing a guy they are supposed to get, tearing him away from his family and friends, and beating him up (Mind you, this is the PG version...) The guy, orig, not the kidnapped dude, then goes on to say how there was a lady who was coming at him, and he told her to stop "I begged her to stay," But she keeps coming, so he shoots her. The chorus after that is "A hero of war, is that what they see? Just medals and scars, so damn proud of me. I buried my flag, now it gathers dust, but it's a flag that I love, it's the only thing I trust."

Now, I don't mind it. People may hate me for that, especially veterans. But before people judge, they need to realize, they have a reason for writing these songs. I always imagine some WWI era soldier, or someone from an ancient war. War had different rules back then, and who knows what could have happened. Sometimes I even think as recently as WWII (which was pretty darn recent.) People say they are against soldiers and that people who think that song is amazing and has a great message need to get a life and all kinds of other things... The problem is, yeah the song is anti war, but the last verse is there for a reason! Personally, I think the guy was "tricked" into it, didn't know what he was getting into, and regrets his actions now. That's just me... But people will say I'm anti-soldiers because of it! (I'm not, btw... My Papou [grandfather] was int he army, my dad was a marine, my brother a navy man, my sister was in the air force, and my cousin is gonna join the army). People need to learn that music is supposed to convey a message, a mental image, something beyond the superficial words that are sung. But that is slowly fading away now that pop culture consists of messages spoon fed to us through music. Rap, in my opinion, certainly doesn't help!

So yeah... Another random rant about art. Comment if you want, I love hearing other peoples opinions!!!

My side not for the night: I LOVE the new album, and I really don't hear that much of a change in Rise Against's style... I really like it, and will be more than happy to lend it to who ever wants to listen! Or I'll burn you a copy.

The Death of Art 3

"You don't need to burn books to destroy a culture; you just need to get people to stop reading ."

I remembered what it was about!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEA!!!!!!!!!

So, I've noticed a sad, but very true, trend appearing. People find a book that is "amazing." They read the book, no matter how HORRIDLY written it may be. They give it to other people. Others read it, and the cycle continues. It's happened so many times! Eragon, Harry Potter, and the newest trend, Twilight (personally, I liked Eragon, Loved book 5 of harry potter, the rest were ok, and hate Twilight with a passion.) Now, normally I would ignore it and move on, read a classic. But with Twilight, it's been bugging me. Quite honestly, I can't stand the way she writes. And, fellow LDS peeps, I don't care how many times people say, "Well, she's LDS too!" Doesn't mean I think she is a better author. She screwed mythology over big time; that's why I hate the books. She added anything she wanted, and took away whatever didn't work. The point of mythological creatures is that they have a history, they have the traits. Each creature is unique and has strengths and weaknesses. Stephanie Myer took away ALL of the weaknesses of a vampire... Save maybe Alice, because Alice screws up once or twice. And to those who say I judge unfairly, I've read the first three books, and gave up on the series before Breaking Dawn. So I have read the books, and I just don't like them. It's my opinion, and I'm not gonna force it on anyone. But really, her writing is like a 5th grader... I had friends writing more interesting and structured analytical essays then her.

On the plus side, I will admit, she has gotten a LOT of my friends to actually pick up a book and read! Which is a feat in and of itself. I just wish they would read something that was actually worth while. Not kidding, for some of my friends, it's the only book they have read. Oh well, better luck next time.

Reading list: My favorites are The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and anything by Kate Mosse (ask me for my two favs if you wanna borrow. My aunt has one, but I will have it back after Thanksgiving) Also, Pride and Prejudice is great for romance people. Meg Cabot has a great modern "King Arthur" myth book out! Great stuff, In my opinion.

The Death of Art 2

"What do you think an artist is? An imbecile who has only eyes, if he is a painter, or ears, if he is a musician, or a lyre in every chamber of his heart if he is a poet, or even, if he is a boxer, just his muscles? Far from it; at the same time, he is also a political being, constantly aware of the heartbreaking, passionate, or delightful things that happen in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. How could it be possible to feel no interest in other people, and with a cool indifference to detach yourself from the very life which they bring to you so abundantly? No, painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war." - Pablo Picasso

Two things. One, I adore this quote. Picasso is one of my favorite artists of all time. Two, I've noticed something odd about "artistic nudity." Not that it's a bad things. IT's very subjective, and that's not what I wanna debate/rant about. No, you see, my rant is on how people seem to think that is because people do have actual work out that is just that, that being "artistic nudity", that they can put up any ol' picture of someone that is nude. Now, personally don't like nudity period. But some do, and that's fine. But really, if there is gonna be something with nudity in it, make the picture worthwhile to look at. Don't just take a picture of someone nude just for fun... Really. I'm not going into detail, mainly because I don't like it to begin with. That's just my opinion though.

Also, I'm trying to tag who ever responded last time... but I can't figure it out right now : ( Being stupid right now... (Me not the computer!)

I had something else I was gonna put in here... but I forgot. So for now, good night, and sweet dreams... And HAPPY ALL HALLOW'S EVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS Debussy, listening right now, great pianist. Very nice music if you wanna take a look. Expect part 3 to have some classical music mentioned, because I'll probably rant about that next XD
